Our laboratory is interested in understanding the epidemiology and pathophysiology of acute kidney injury (AKI) in critically ill patients. AKI, as currently clinically defined, is caused by a heterogeneous set of pathophysiologic processes and is associated with variable outcomes. We have identified AKI sub-phenotypes with different genetic and molecular characteristics, risk of clinical outcomes, and response to therapeutics. Identification of AKI sub-phenotypes could improve risk prognostication and may be useful for predictive enrichment in clinical trials.
