Dr. Paul W. Sanders is Professor of Medicine and holder of the Thomas E. Andreoli Endowed Chair in Nephrology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He is also Chief of the Renal Section at the Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center and is Director of the Nephrology Research and Training Center at UAB. After completing a residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Nephrology at UAB, Dr. Sanders has remained on faculty and has risen in the ranks to his present position. He has received a number of honors that include election into Alpha Omega Alpha and the American Society for Clinical Investigation. He is Fellow of the American College of Physicians and American Heart Association. His research has been funded for more than two decades by the Department of Veterans Affairs and by the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Sanders has served on numerous grant review committees for the National Institutes of Health, National Kidney Foundation, American Heart Association, American Society of Nephrology, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. He has authored 103 peer-reviewed articles and 47 book chapters and editorials that describe the vascular and renal alterations associated with dietary salt intake and the mechanism(s) of acute and chronic kidney injury induced by immunoglobulin light chains.
